At the open of the New York session, the major currency pairs had already reached pivot levels normally considered profit targets. US news, including the high-profile CPI release, met expectations and failed to provide further inspiration to the market. Only a unique, unpredictable event -- conflicting reports on the addition of liquidity to the markets by the Federal Reserve -- provided volatility, but made for tough trading. Capital preservation prevailed for most conservative traders.

Just before the start of today's New York session, the European Central Bank announced its decision to keep interest rates right where they are. More important, though, was the statement following the decision, featuring hawkish commentary from ECB president Trichet. Add rising gold prices to the mix, and you have a recipe for a rising EUR/USD. Profits of up to 100 pips were served up to traders who put the ingredients together and executed a conservative trade plan.

U.S. dollar weakness was prevalent across the major currency pairs during today's London session. Technical and fundamental analyses suggested that the EUR/USD was likely the pair most conducive to a significant continuation of the prior USD-driven moves. The euro did not disapppoint during the New York session. Traders who combined a conservative long trade entry with an exit at today's M4 pivot point, earned a profit of between 50 and 75 pips (depending on entry).

The major currency pairs had mostly exhausted their pivot points during the London session. Fortunately, the USD/CAD showed signs of continuing its yo-yo pattern within the up-channel of the past three weeks. A candle close below the psychological level and the lower Bollinger Band was the confirmation that we were looking for, and the Loonie was generous enough to give us a second-chance entry. A fine end to the trading week.

During London trading, the EUR/JPY had already broken the M1 pivot point and bounced at S2, dropping nearly double its recent average daily range in the process. Although the pair was destined for consolidation, New York traders still had hope. Those who applied range trading techniques on the 3-minute chart in the early part of today's session, managed to carve out two separate trades -- one short, one long -- each netting up to 50 pips.

The AUD/USD and EUR/USD were found sitting on key moving averages at the open of today's New York session. Using the 3-minute chart as confirmation in both cases, traders found entries for long trades near those levels of dynamic support. After seeing gains in price of at least 25 pips, those who locked in profits of 15 pips were glad they moved their stops, as neither currency pair managed to make a sustained move.

Tuesday featured a surprise intrameeting 75 basis point rate cut by the Federal Reserve. Yesterday saw hawkish commentary delivered by the leader of the European Central Bank. Today's result: Up, up, and up for the EUR/USD. The entry zone for a long trade on the euro during today's New York session was defined by the convergence of a Fibonacci retracement level and the 21 ema. The market's subsequent move to two pivot point profit targets -- first M4, then R2 -- was classic.

Comments today by Japanese MOF officials sparked a lot of movement in early London trading today. The AUD/USD, for example, dropped more than 180 pips in about 30 minutes. New York traders, some of whom might have felt that they missed a golden opportunity, didn't need to dwell on the past for very long. Another 40 to 60 pips were available to those who stuck around for the Aussie's second act.

The AUD/JPY had been in an uptrend since the early part of the Asian session. During its climb, it broke the 21 and 55 emas on the 15-minute chart, then reached the 200 ema about an hour into the New York session. In that vicinity, the Aussie Yen found more than a 200 ema -- it was also home to a psychological level and the top of the channel. The 3-minute chart provided an outstanding entry, and the width of the channel predicted the ultimate downside target with almost eerie accuracy.
